Cat lovers recognize the importance of choosing the right litter for their furry friends' health and well-being. Unfortunately, many conventional cat litters contain hazardous substances that can pose risks to both cats and their humans. In this blog post, we'll examine harmful additives common in cat litter and explore non-toxic cat litter options for safer and more eco-friendly litter box solutions.
Conventional cat litters are filled with harmful substances, posing potential health risks, including the following:
Clumping Agents (like sodium bentonite): Many conventional litters use the chemical compound sodium bentonite as a clumping agent. While clumping cat litter is convenient for cleaning, some clumping agents like sodium bentonite can expand when ingested (grooming, etc.) by cats, leading to gastrointestinal blockages and other health issues. [1] The environmental impact is also concerning as the mining of sodium bentonite can disrupt ecosystems. [2] [3]
Silica Dust (Crystalline Silica): Relating to the clumping agents discussed above, silica-containing bentonite is sometimes found in cat litters. When cats dig or when litter is poured, silica particles become airborne and inhaled by both cats and humans. Silica dust in cat litter can be harmful when inhaled, leading to respiratory concerns in both cats and humans. [4] [5] Chronic exposure can cause severe respiratory issues and has been linked to serious diseases in long-term scenarios. [6]
Artificial Fragrances & Phthalates: Many cat litters are scented with artificial fragrances to mask odor, but these fragrances may contain toxic chemicals that can cause irritation as well as other potentially harmful health concerns. [7] Furthermore, these fragrances often contain phthalates, which are plasticizing chemicals that have been linked to hormonal disruptions and reproductive issues. [8]
Chemical Additives: Some cat litters contain chemical additives like dyes, which may be ingested by cats during grooming, and lead to concerning health issues. [9] Keep in mind, many additives are not labeled on the packaging, so make sure to research each ingredient in the litter you choose to avoid exposure to undesirable substances.
In addition to the substances mentioned above, there are even more ingredients that are often found in cat litter that may be harmful to your pet. However, as more people become aware of these risks, the move toward non-toxic cat litter is increasingly gaining traction. Eco-friendly litters made from materials like plants and wood can provide safe cat litter options that are both biodegradable and free from synthetic chemicals.
Additionally, seek out cat litters that do not contain artificial fragrances, chemical additives, and clumping agents to minimize potential health risks to you and your feline companions. By prioritizing safer and eco-friendly cat litter options, you can provide your cat with a healthier and more comfortable litter box experience while reducing your environmental footprint.
Top Non-Toxic Cat Litter
So, let’s dig into some healthy litter box solutions. However, I’ll start by saying this, the reality is that there is no perfect cat litter option available on the market, every litter has pros and cons. For the most part, all cat litters will still have some level of dust that may be inhaled by your pet and there is a chance that your pet will ingest the litter to a degree when cleaning themselves, which could still cause health concerns. Though there is no %100 ideal litter solution, the chemical-free cat litter options below offer much safer alternatives.
Please note, to help prevent unwanted inhalation of litter, wear a mask whenever changing a litter box. Also, keep an eye on if your cat has any adverse reactions to their litter, and talk with your vet about which litter is right for your feline friends. Be sure to scoop your cat’s litter 2 to 3 times per week (daily is even better!) and change the entire contents of the litter box while deep cleaning the box itself regularly. Additionally, consider buying a litter-trapping mat to help prevent unwanted litter tracking. These actions can help reduce exposure to harmful litter contents.
Sustainably Yours offers litter that’s made from two food-grade ingredients, corn and cassava. They have three different litter blends available including Large-Grain Formula (for minimal tracking), Mixed-Grain Formula (for balanced performance), and Small-Grain Formula (for faster clumping). The starches used in this litter help to eliminate moisture with fast drying clumps that reduce bacteria. Their litter is unscented and free of artificial fragrances, clay, silica, and chemicals. Additionally, they use proprietary machinery that is able to remove dust during the production process, helping to create nearly dust-free litter.
I followed up with them to learn more about the ingredients in their litter. They did not specifically state if pesticides are used during the growing process of the corn and cassava, but they did explain that the raw material from their suppliers in Brazil conform to applicable legal regulations in their region. Also, they mentioned that their litter was tested for pesticides and according to the methodology analysis, no pesticides were detected. Furthermore, I confirmed with them that the only ingredients in their litter are corn and cassava, no other ingredients or additives are used. This is the cat litter we currently use in our household and we have had no issues.
Dofu Cat tofu litter offers a natural cat litter solution by using simple ingredients including bean fibre, peas, corn starch, and guar gum. Their litter is free of bentonite, silica, and other additives. I followed up with them to learn more about the crop growing process of the ingredients used in the litter, and their ingredients are not organically (without pesticides) grown. However, they did state that they have tested the litter for formaldehyde, caffeine, and aflatoxins with the tests resulting in none being detected.
Keep in mind, tofu litter may mold if not used or stored properly, so make sure to store the litter in a cool and dry space, and be sure to scoop the litter regularly to further prevent potential mold growth, protecting your furry friends.

Naturally Fresh’s cat litter is made from 100% natural walnut shells using the soft tissue from English walnut shells. They use this specific type of walnut to limit toxicity concerns linked to those associated with juglone (phenolic organic compound with respiratory toxins), which is present in higher concentrations in Black Walnut Tree nuts. Though there is no way to remove the juglone from walnuts, they do their best to minimize exposure in their litter formula. If you are still concerned about potential ingestion, then it may be best to select a different litter. In order to process the walnut, they pelletized it using high heat and steam as well as a small amount of a food-grade mold inhibitor. The walnuts they use to make the litter are grown using a nearly organic formula made of enzymes. Additionally, all of the crops are tested with results yielding no traces of pesticides in the walnut shell or meat. Furthermore, their litter is unscented and silica dust free with no added chemicals.
The walnut shells have natural properties that help to neutralize the ammonia smell of cat urine. However, this litter formula also contains a fecal malodor counteractant with the exact ingredients being proprietary to the manufacturer, but when I reached out they said they use an enzyme for odor control. I prefer more transparency regarding the exact ingredients of this formula, but they did state that it is natural and toxin-free. I followed up for more details on their ingredients, and besides walnuts, they mentioned that the clumping agent in their quick clumping formula is both plant-based and food-grade. The two ingredients they use are commonly found in many of the foods that both humans and pets eat, but they did not specify the exact ingredients. Furthermore, they stated that their litter is free of phthalates and other additives.
*If you or your cat have an allergy to nuts, it’s best to avoid using this litter. Also, this litter is dark in color, so it may be harder to identify if something is off regarding your pet's bathroom habits.
Making the switch to non-toxic cat litter is not only better for your cat’s health, but supports a more sustainable lifestyle as many safer brands offer biodegradable cat litter options. Overall, chemical-free cat litter minimizes the risk to both humans and cats of exposure to harmful substances, ensuring a healthier life for our beloved pets and a cleaner planet for everyone. Replacing conventional litter with non-toxic cat litter will help provide your furry friend the safe and eco-friendly litter box solution they deserve.
